Back to school days

That time of year again after a good summer of fun, exploring, relaxing, camping and visiting. Now it is time to get back into the routine of school and activities. Heather is going into grade one and continuing with French immersion and is now starting full days starting at 08.26. Finlay is going into Junior Kindergarten for 21/2 hours in the afternoons. So Iam going to have 2 hours to suit myself.

Last year Heather was in afternoon kindergarten and we enjoyed our time in the mornings, waking to our natural rhythm and I was anticipating this year with some trepidation . However I have had to wake the kids up at 06.45 , but we have managed to get out the house and walk to school and are on time every morning, even with the spanners that Finlay tries to put into the works, whether it be that his socks don't fit right, or his sleeves are rumfelled, or he has to change his jacket to then want the original one on as we are going out the door. So all can seem very calm and organized at 8.00 and then all of a sudden we are thrown into the mist of a melt down and tantrum in the boot room. However we are not letting that hold us back from our great track record of getting to school on time and have often left the house with a screaming boy by our side. If you ignore him long enough that little boy goes away and when we get to school, he has come back to his normal self.

While we wait for the bell and the doors to open, Heather walks to the top of the steps to wait for her little friend to arrive off the bus, she greets her with a hug and then they get in line with the rest of the kids. Heather seems to love school, she enjoys being with her friends and seems to have many friends, she is a wee social butterfly and she also loves her teacher. She is in for the full day, has lunch in class at 12 noon, then has recess from 12.20. Finlay and I are often greeted by her as we settle him into the JK room as she is going out to play. We have started a routine that every Thurs I collect her at that time and we walk to the local cafe for a coffee, hot chocolate and some girl time.

I get to spend the mornings with Finlay and sometimes go for a bike ride, I try to take him swimming once a week and he is making great progress in his swimming, the last few weeks saw a change from a boy who wouldn't put his head in the water, wouldn't jump in and hated being splashed, to now swimming with a float the length of the pool, jumping in and trying to swim by himself. He loves going under water with his goggles on and diving for his buddies. So it is great that I can focus this enthusiasm one on one. He has also enjoyed gymnastics on a Tuesday morning and we try to get to the library once a week too.

My free two hours is often filled with preparing the evening meal so that the transition after activities is smooth and I am not left with frenzied hungry monsters, shopping for food and I try to get out for a run at least twice a week, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for 30 mins depending how I feel. Some weeks I have to work evenings, so it is again preparing food for kids, dad and mum then off to work until 11pm. Then at 6.00 my day starts all over again.
